New Alexandra Theatre unveils dazzling Spring Season Theatre and Arts by Editor - March 13, 2018March 13, 20180 A host of exciting new productions are set to grace the stage of the New Alexandra Theatre this y ear, as the venue unveils its dazzling new Spring season. Motown The Musical, Saturday Night Fever and Fame are just some of the hit shows which are lined up at the Station Street venue over the coming year. Also featuring are Rock of Ages and a festive run for the first ever production of Benidorm Live. Plus, New Alexandra Theatre Stage Experience presents Boogie Nights, the much-loved classic Dirty Dancing retur And in a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the classic film, BMOS present the family favourite, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Described as ‘One Big Soul Extravaganza’ Motown The Musical tells the story of Berry Gordy who founded Motown Records and launched the careers of legendary artists including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Temptations and many more. The show features 50 classic hits including My Girl, Dancing In The Street, What’s Going On and I Heard It Through The Grapevine and runs from Thursday 11 October to Saturday 3 November 2018. Meanwhile, a brand new stage version of Saturday Night Fever hits the stage from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 September. Whilst paying homage to the 1977 John Travolta classic, the all new stage version promises more drama and music, but still promises the classic soundtrack which inc ludes the Bee Gees greatest hits including Stayin’ Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever and More Than A Woman. It tells the iconic story of Tony Manero and his reckless yet thrilling road to dancing success. Fame is the international smash hit sensation following the lives of students at New York’s High School For The Performing Arts as they navigate their way through the highs and lows and the romances and heartbreaks in life. Featuring the Oscar winning title song and a cast of outstanding dancers, singers, musicians and rappers Fame runs from Monday 19 toSaturday 24 November. The smash hit musical Rock of Ages returns from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 November, and is sure to have everyone singing along to a host of epic songs, including Here I Go Again, The Final Countdown and Can’t Fight This Feeling. Check-in is also open for the World Premiere of Benidorm Live which takes over the New Alex for a festive run, from Monday 3 toSaturday 29 December. The first ever stage version of the hit ITV Show will celebrate over a decade of all-inclusive hilarity, having followed the ensemble cast of holiday makers and staff for ten series since it was first broadcast. It will star all of the cast favourites including Jake Canuso, Adam Gillen, Sherrie Hewson and Tony Maudsley. This year New Alexandra Theatre Stage Experience will bring one of the grooviest every musicals to the stage – Boogie Nights. Following the heart-warming story of Roddy O’Neil, and his experiences of growing up in the disco decade, the show is pa cked with hits such as You Sexy Thing, Y.M.C.A, I will Survive and In The Navy. It hits the stage from Wednesday 22 to Saturday 25 August. Elsewhere, described as ‘the biggest theatre sensation of all time’, Dirty Dancing – the Classic Story On Stage, returns to the New Alexfrom Monday 5 to Saturday 10 November and features the much-loved hits Hungry Eyes, Baby Do You Love Me? And the heart-stopping (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life. Family favourite Madagascar will then delight adults and children alike in a brand new production which comes to the theatre fromTuesday 31 July to Saturday 4 August. Filled with outlandish characters, adventure galore and an upbeat score, it promises hours of fun as it follows the characters as they escape from New York’s Central park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey within a madcap world. And to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the hit movie, BMOS will bring a brand new production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to the stage in a brand new production from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 June. Everyone is invited to join the all singing, all dancing BMOS cast and The Midland Concert Orchestra on a magical musical adventure for all the family. Other shows lined up in the next few months include Legally Blonde The Musical starring Eastenders star Rita Simons a nd Eurovision hopeful Lucie Jones and follows the story of Elle Woods who bags herself a place at the prestigious Harvard Law School. The all-singing, all-dancing romantic comedy features from Monday 21 to Saturday 26 May. The UK premiere of Sting’s personal, political and passionate musical The Last Ship is an epic tale of community, hope and a great act of collective defiance. Featuring an original score with music and lyrics by Sting himself, it stars Richard Fleeshman, Charlie Hardwick andJoe McGann and tells the story of Gideon Fletcher who returns home from sea to discover the demise of the ship-building world in Newcastle. It will run from Monday 16 to Saturday 21 April. Running from Tuesday 12 to Saturday 16 June is Summer Holiday The Musical which is based on the iconic Cliff Richard film. StarringRay Quinn, the hit-filled production includes classics such as In The Country, Summer Holiday, Living Doll and Do You Wanna Dance? Marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War Birdsong is the critically acclaimed show based on Sebastian Faulks’best -selling novel. A mesmerising story of love and courage set both before and during the great war, everyone is encouraged to catch this stunning piece of theatre on stage when it runs from Monday 18 to Saturday 23 June. Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff will make his stage debut in Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends, alongside Jodie Prenger, Sam Bailey and Kevin Kennedy, when it is staged from Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 April. The musical follows the infamous group of TV’s most lovable characters as they are put through their Zumba paces at their local branch of Super Slimmers by the lovelorn Lauren, whilst Kelly fantasises about fitting into the wedding dress of her dreams. Opera and Ballet International presents the stunning Verdi’s La Traviata on Wednesday 25 April and Madama Butterfly on Thursday 26 April. Verdi’s La Traviata is a tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music in Verdi’s outstanding interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century, La Dame auz Camelias. Meanwhile Madama Butterfly is the heart-breaking story of the beautiful young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant.
