Music Piracy Debate with Tim Burgess

There’s an interesting debate going on RIGHT NOW for those interested in the issue: Music Piracy.

What do you think? Should downloading music be illegal? Doesn’t the musician have a right to earn a living from their craft?

There have been some interesting issues raised – here is a brief highlight –

@Tim_Burgess musicians will have to adapt like everyone else. Put your salary over the last decade in brackets and compare it with a nurse?

If you´re particularly militant about downloading music for free stick your job in brackets after your tweet. Maybe offer some free work ; )

This link is particularly interesting – http://t.co/0HGB17TE – an artists needs 4 million spotify plays to earn US minimum wage in a month!

Some may say it is a victimless crime – do they need the money?  Then again, when was the last time you worked for free?

If all musicians should expect to not make anything, then how will we ever get people wanting to contribute to the arts at all?

It’s all too easy for anyone on the outside looking in at celebrities in the music world with their millions, but put yourselves in their shoes – if you had a talent and you produced something special, shouldn’t you be paid for it?

I know myself, from experience, that there are some artists out there who make no money on their music any more, the record industry in some respects is dead. Some bands these days only make their money on touring and merchandise. Let’s not forget that for an act to come and play an arena, a festival, any gig, there are costs and no-one can afford to do this job for free – except Pele from The Hives but he’s different  Wink
