Bio

It was an otherwise quiet January in New York City when, in a college dorm still emptied out for the holidays, Miss Grit first came roaring to life.

“It was over winter break, and I decided to go back to school early,” explains Margaret Sohn, the band’s frontwoman, guitar player, songwriter, and producer. “I just started writing; I didn’t even plan on releasing things, I wanted to prove to myself that I could write music I actually liked.” Soon enough it was apparent that the songs she was writing weren’t only impressive enough for her to like, but to catch the ears of a much wider audience.

A few short months later, Sohn drafted classmates from New York University to join her on drums (Greg Tock) and bass (Zoltán Sindhu), and the group spent an overnight session at Brooklyn’s Virtue and Vice Studios recording their first four songs with co-producer, engineer, and mixer Charles Mueller.

The powerful, melodic, and intricate resulting tracks would form the Talk Talk EP, which the band released in January of 2019; the debut featured two singles (“Talk Talk” and “The Bride,” which was highlighted by Spotify as a standout track) and was hailed by NME as an “explosion of creativity” and “a truly awe-inspiring first work.” Uproxx proclaimed Sohn “has a creative spark of somebody beyond her years.”

That’s not entirely surprising when you consider Sohn’s experience. She’s currently studying music technology at NYU and has logged time working in recording studios in New York City and her native Michigan, where she contributed to albums for artists including Flint Eastwood and My Brightest Diamond. In addition to having more than 15 years under her belt as a guitar player, Sohn also works as a guitar and studio technician, as well as a producer.

After the success of Talk Talk, the band went back into the studio to record two more tracks. The first to be released is “Running Slow,” out April TK on Spanish Prayers Records. The song tackles concepts like imposter syndrome and self-worth but also features Miss Grit’s trademark fuzz guitars and a driving, propulsive sound that climaxes in a frenzy of strings. “There’s an aggression to the song,” Sohn says, but there’s also an undeniable energy that makes it as invigorating as it is soulful.

The band will tour internationally in support of the singles this spring before heading back into the studio to record a debut album.
