GODSIZED ‘Time’ Review Music Reviews by Rob W - April 9, 20130 It seems like Godsized have been around forever. We’re used to seeing them at all the big festivals, in the not so big pubs and clubs and not forgetting that stint with Mr Wylde a few years back. All of that was off the back of just two E.P.’s! So with the release of their debut full lengther; surely things are about to take off massively for the Southern Flavoured UK riff generators. ‘Time’ is self-released by the band and you can hear the blood, sweat and beards that have gone into the recording. It’s a beast of a record that demands to be listened to. Returning with their Southern influenced big riffs and sweet melodies, Godsized have matured into a mean old hard rock machine. With gargantuan riffs and the odd pinch harmonic borrowed from their Black Label Society buddies the music is brash and harsh, giving Clutch a run for their money in the no nonsense rock’n’roll category. This is carefully balanced out by melodic vocals that echo Myles Kennedy and more predictably have a Van Zant lean to them. Lead single from the album is ‘Heavy Load’. A steamrolling riff accompanied by a soulful vocal which demonstrates perfectly what Godsized do. It’s crushing but melodic. It’s catchy whilst maintaining a heaviness that keeps the riff worshippers happy. It’s a perfect balance really and that’s a theme that resonates through the whole album. There are heavier bits and there are lighter bits, see ‘Perfect Moment’ and ‘One More Time’ respectively, but the balance just shows how well Godsized have pitched this one. Godsized have a great vibe, mixing the old influences from the Deep South with more modern hard rock edge. It’s a bit like what Black Stone Cherry do…but loads better! 9/10 Out 22nd April. Rob W
