Angelspit W/Uberbyte & Murder of crows 14/09/12: Eddies nightclub, B’ham

In a small club in Birmingham there stood a great trio of acts that made one grand live event.  From the local sound from Murder of Crows, to industrial veterans Angelspit, this gig was the essence of what a great  concert consists of.  It was the middle of a trilogy of gigs that featured Uberbyte, the self confessed Sheffield’s’ finest of Industrial, support the Wall st. massacre European tour.

The night began with local new comers Murder of crows.  Their sound was a mix of post punk and 90’s indie fuelled trip hop that had female vocals drizzled over the top.  Their presents brought back memories to Angelspit front man Zoog Von rock, whose love for the good old days of punk and industrial rock made him speak out about the genre he has come to be apart of.  “Industrial is dying” he said, “The last few years has seen the genre shrink  due to a formula being made making it easy to make with little fuss or creativity.  It’s hard to push the genre on the young generation of today.”  He explained that there was still hope in the guise of new bands, such as Tankt, Flesh eating foundation & Baal (who happen to be Skinny Puppy’s favourite band at present.)

Showing off  the UK’s best in alternative electronic music was Uberbyte who gave everyone present a surprise.  Gone were the red military outfits and the quirky songs the band had become known for.  In it’s place were an under stated set of people in black playing material off their new album ‘5 year plan’.  Tracks like ‘Threadhead’ proved that there was more to the band than funny sampling and shouty vocals by adding layers upon a hard dance motif, whereas ‘Archetype’ showed that Rich Pyne had gotten his lust for singing back, with the track sounding like a euphoric 90’s dance hit.  With their new album out next month it’s set to be the best album the band have made so far. Angelspit came in with a bang.  Their 4th time in the UK, they played songs spanning their whole discography, including 100% and Kill kitty.  With the new live members filling up the tracks with guitar crunches and live drums on top on the broken beat glitches provided by Zoog himself, the set was full of fan favourites.  Tracks like ‘Skinny little bitch’ seemed better as a live version as the crowd swelled into full swing, and by the end of the show they were begging for more.

After an encore of which was dedicated to the son of Satan, the band retired to meet the fans, an experience that was a little alien to the group.  “I love the UK” Zoog stated, “you’re alternative scene know how to rock and also know how to drink!”.

“When asked what was next for the group, Zoog replied “After the North American tour we will be working on our most epic album to date. We have been slogging it out for 8 years and we’re still focused on keeping it fresh. We are the generation that first made the decision to mix Bootsy Collins over punk beats, but in these times, it’s the everyday thing. I’ve found myself listening to a lot of GLitch/Electro-punk – I had no idea how those guys made that stuff, so I built electronic and acoustic instruments to help create something similar. These new instruments helped us find a new sound – which inspired our new album “Hello My Name Is”.

Angelspit will now take a break from touring, but they will not forget their roots and what makes their fans smile.  With so much for the fans to discover on the site, through the music and on tour, the band still have a lot to offer.
