Nottingham Theatre Royal hosted a glorious celebration of one of music’s most innovative minds. The Genius of Brian Wilson wasn’t just a tribute, but a vivid reimagining of Wilson’s work, showing just why his music still resonates so deeply.
The show combined the tight, vibrant playing of The Buzz Band with the lush sweep of the English Philharmonic Orchestra. Together they delivered a sound that managed to be faithful to the originals while also adding fresh depth and colour.
Rather than a greatest hits jukebox, the concert took the audience on a journey. It began with the irresistible energy of early Beach Boys surf anthems before moving through Wilson’s increasingly ambitious arrangements, culminating in the intricate beauty of Pet Sounds.
Vocally, the ensemble impressed with crystal clear harmonies and genuine warmth. Highlights included stirring renditions of “God Only Knows,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and the timeless “Good Vibrations,” each one lifting the audience.
Visuals played a part too. Tasteful backdrops provided atmosphere without ever stealing focus from the music. More importantly, the arrangements cleverly translated Wilson’s famously layered studio techniques into a live setting. The orchestra in particular gave new dimension to the songs, with strings, brass and woodwinds bringing out nuances that often remain buried on record.
What stood out most was the show’s refusal to indulge in mere nostalgia. Instead, it celebrated Wilson as a craftsman and innovator, highlighting his genius not only as a pop songwriter but as a composer with a unique voice.
It was clear the event had succeeded. It was intelligent, heartfelt and beautifully staged, leaving the audience with renewed appreciation for one of the greats. If the production tours again, it is an experience not to be missed.
