Review – Darktown Jubilee

darktownDarktown Jubilee are an upbeat indie rock band. As soon as you listen to them you want to jump about and dance like no one’s watching. My favourite song from their debut album “The World, the Flesh & the Devil” is Breakdown, David Boardman’s vocals are mind-blowingly good, the huskiness and the pain in his voice really show the tail of the band, and how they obviously have something to say.

When I listen to Darktown Jubilee I can tell that their songs are catchy which makes me want to listen to them again, when I do I start to understand the story behind the songs and the lyrics. In Breakdown the listener finds out that there is so much beneath the fun, jumpy, catchy song, there’s pain there, so much so that they broke down, the affection they once had was gone. It reminds me very much of the Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon in their prime.

The band formed in 2010 and have been touring around the North West of England getting a name for themselves. The 5 piece band is made up of David Boardman (vocals and guitar), Stuart Day (bass), John Cosgrove (drums), Al Roberts (lead guitar) and Gary O’Brien (keyboards). The members have been in their fair share of bands, Boardman thinks that he has finally found the right mix of people to release his classic songs to the world.

“Between us we’ve been in several bands and supported such big names such as Elton John and 30 Seconds to Mars but until now we’ve not quite had the right line-up to take it to the next level”.

When listening to the band you can here influences of new classics such as U2, Snow Patrol, The Killers, The Temper Trap, Arctic Monkeys and also a touch of The Vaccines.

I believe 2013 is going to be a huge year for Darktown Jubilee, their debut album has been released and is out on iTunes now, if I were you I’d buy it!
