Rubicava – Get Well Soon – Review Music Reviews by Editor - August 23, 2012August 23, 20120 Rubicava are the kind of band that send tingles through your body and have your toes curling with excitement. The upcoming, majorly underexposed band – If I do say so myself, definitely have a commendable future ahead of them in the music industry. The alternative indie/rock/pop four piece, consisting of Matt Bennett (drums), Jevon Davies (guitar), Kyle Gayne (bass) and last but not least, Benjamin Hiorns (singer/songwriter), formed around Birmingham in early 2010. Since then, the band have self released their debut album Get Well Soon. When I first listened to the album, instantly, I liked what I was hearing. Get Well Soon varies between upbeat alternative rock tracks with catchy melodies and beats, and slower, lazy summer type tracks. Fans of The XX, The Vaccines and Vampire Weekend are definitely in for a treat with this album. The first track on the album, and also first single; Wastemaker, is without a doubt the strongest on the album. Wastemaker has a memorable riff, is upbeat and is definitely the song to listen to when feeling down, perhaps. What I like about Rubicava is that despite having similar elements to other bands, they’re still very original and fresh-sounding. Get Well Soon varies continuously throughout. The next song on the album continues on a strong standard with Crash. The song is a little less “dancy” than the first, which admittedly, I prefer. Though, what brought my attention to the song was the clever, captivating lyrics such as, “The hyper ball of hypocrisy, you play the game that you used to teach.” The song is strong, and an absolutely hit. The album slows down a little bit more with Table For One, but takes a toll with the memorable song Comatose & Happy, which in my opinion is the catchiest song on the album. Then we get to Call Me When You’re Lonely, which appears to be quite a favourite with Rubicava fans. Call Me When You’re Lonely is fast paced and melodic, again steering away from the pop persona that could have been given due to some of the other songs on the album. We slow down again and reach one of my personal favourites, We Bleed Colour. Admittedly, the song appealed to me from the beginning, just from the title itself – but did not fail to lower my expectations once the song had begun. We Bleed Colour is the kind of song that you’d listen to on a road trip; slow and relaxing with an element of excitement. The last song on the album, Leaving Las Vegas is one of the weaker tracks on the album, despite having some of the best lyrics. Overall, Get Well Soon sounds completely professional for a self released album; it’s definitely an album to have around during the holidays, as it is from this moment on, declared by me; the summer anthem. Rubicava are extremely talented and tragically underrated, though with an album like Get Well Soon, they have big things heading their way. Rubicava are definitely ones to look out for.
