The Time and Space Machine – Good Morning Review Music Reviews by Editor - August 14, 20120 Former NME writer and member of The Grid (Ambient house, House, Techno), Richard Norris, whose other talents have seen him play the role of DJ, producer , A&R man and author, has been spending time on his recent project , The Time and Space Machine. The Time and Space Machine’s debut album, Set Phazer to Stun, was released in 2010 and made the Top 100 of Rough Trade’s albums of the year. Taste the Laser was the band’s follow up released in 2012. More recently The Time and Space Machine have been transforming into a live band that features Hammond organ, guitars, bass, drums, vocal harmonies and a “retina stretching psychedelic light show”. Their latest release is Good Morning. Reminding me somewhat of The King of Woolworth’s Baklerloo, Good Morning features a downtempo groove which along with the lazily sung lyrics: “Good morning, it’s time to face the day”, is the perfect antidote to years of waking up to copper-topped motormouth Chris Evans and his incessant chirping. The industrial-sized skip brimming with smashed clock radios beneath my bedroom window is testimony to this man’s talent for irritation. Opening with a simple melody played on a steel-bodied guitar riding above dreamy synth washes, the track gently carries you along, ambling through a landscape of carefree thoughts and gentle showers of psychedelia. There is a Strawberry Fields Forever flavour to the song but not so overt as to be overpowering. Additionally, one can detect Eastern instrumentation in the closing section of the song which serves to heighten the mystical ambience throughout. Fans of the Ministry of Sound’s Chilled Acoustic album will comfortably slide into the laid-back vibe of this track. Alongside the radio edit of Good Morning are three other mixes: the Left Side Wobble Mix (featuring a stronger beat and a prominent synth bassline), the Saint Etienne Mix (a dance mix featuring female vocal samples), and the Coyote Balearic Mantra Remix (featuring heavy reverb and a tribal beat). Release date for all mixes is the 6th August. The band also have a headline slot at the Green Man Festival on the 19th August as well as further UK and European dates to follow.
