Previously unseen footage of David Bowie performing at Earl’s Court in 1978 is set to be transformed into an arena spectacle in 2027. The project has been spearheaded by director Brett Morgen, who spent a decade painstakingly remastering the material.
Morgen first encountered the 35mm film cans, labelled ‘Stage’, in 2017 while given complete access to Bowie’s archive during the production of his acclaimed 2022 documentary, Moonage Daydream. Initially believing the cans related to the live album of the same name recorded largely in Philadelphia, the filmmaker soon realised the material captured the legendary 1978 Earl’s Court concerts, which had remained hidden for nearly half a century.
Having reviewed every existing filmed performance of the late musician during his previous documentary work, Morgen described the newly restored concert footage as unquestionably the finest captured performance of Bowie’s career.
