Because music matters…

New Model Army – Nottingham Rock City – 12.12.26

New Model Army returned to Rock City and delivered a performance that felt urgent, emotionally grounded, and deeply communal. This was not a band going through the motions. It was a band fully engaged with its audience, drawing on decades of material that still resonates with real force.

The set opened with Better Than Them and Stranger, immediately establishing a mood of intensity and focus. From there, the night unfolded with a careful balance of power and reflection. Songs such as Snelsmore Wood and Another Imperial Day carried a sense of weight and momentum, while 1984 landed with particular impact, its themes still feeling uncomfortably relevant.

As the set progressed, the atmosphere inside Rock City became increasingly unified. A Liberal Education and Idumea were met with huge responses, the crowd singing along with conviction rather than nostalgia. There was a noticeable shift in tone during Christian Militia and Echo November, both delivered with clarity and restraint, allowing their emotional depth to speak for itself. Moments like First Summer After and Winter brought a quieter intensity, drawing the room into a shared stillness before releasing it again.

The latter part of the main set pushed the energy higher. Never Arriving and No Rest felt especially cathartic, with the crowd fully locked in. When Here Comes the War, 51st State and 225 followed, the sense of collective purpose in the room was unmistakable. These were not just songs being performed; they were being lived in real time by band and audience alike.

The encore only strengthened that feeling. Vagabonds, Purity and Green and Grey were greeted like old friends, while Coming or Going, Stupid Questions and I Love the World brought the night to a powerful and uplifting close.

Rock City may be a large venue, but the evening felt intimate and close-knit. There was a genuine sense of community in the crowd, spanning generations, united by shared values as much as shared music. New Model Army proved once again that their live shows are not just concerts, but experiences rooted in connection, honesty and intensity. For those there, it was a night that felt meaningful, energising, and hard to forget.
