The Halle Christmas Concert – Review – 17.12.25

Last night’s Hallé Christmas Concert at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall struck a near-perfect balance between festive warmth and musical excellence, reaffirming why this orchestra remains one of the great cultural institutions of the UK.

From the opening bars, there was an immediate sense of confidence and generosity in the playing. The Hallé sounded rich and expansive without ever becoming overbearing. The strings provided a warm, glowing core, while the brass added moments of brilliance and celebration that felt entirely in keeping with the season. Even in the most exuberant passages, the clarity of the orchestra’s sound was striking, with every musical line given space to breathe.

A major highlight of the evening was the featured singer, Rodney Earl Clarke, whose versatility and stage presence added an extra layer of enjoyment to the programme. He moved effortlessly between musical theatre, classical repertoire, operatic moments, and more contemporary material, giving the concert a broad appeal without ever losing cohesion. His performances felt confident and engaging, helping to bridge styles and making the evening feel genuinely inclusive. There was truly something for everyone, whether your tastes lean towards West End showstoppers, sweeping opera, traditional classical works, or modern festive favourites.

The programme itself was thoughtfully constructed, avoiding the feel of a predictable Christmas playlist. Alongside the seasonal material, works by John Williams and Ennio Morricone stood out as definite personal highlights, brought to life with both grandeur and sensitivity. Familiar pieces were refreshed through expressive interpretation, while less expected selections added contrast and depth. Playful moments were delivered with charm, and the more reflective sections carried real emotional weight.

The atmosphere in the hall played a huge part in making the evening feel special. There was a clear sense of connection between the orchestra, Clarke, and the audience, with a relaxed and celebratory mood throughout. This was perfectly capped by a singalong encore, a delightful final touch that drew the audience fully into the performance and sent everyone out on a collective high.

That enthusiasm was evident beyond the stage. At the interval and on the way out, conversations were filled with praise, with many people openly sharing how much they had loved the show. By the final notes, it felt less like a standard concert and more like a shared seasonal experience.

More than simply a festive evening, the Hallé Christmas Concert was a reminder of the power of live music to bring people together. It marked the true arrival of the Christmas season in Nottingham, delivered with warmth, inclusivity, and outstanding musicianship.
