Inspiral Carpets – A Mooving night at Rock City

Inspiral Carpets returned to Rock City earlier this month with a show that felt both electric and deeply human. From the opening notes, there was a sense that this would be more than a standard reunion gig. It was part celebration, part homecoming, and at times a heartfelt remembrance.

The band wasted no time in reminding everyone why they were such a vital part of the Madchester scene. Their signature organ driven sound filled the room and carried that unmistakable pulse that gets under the skin. Songs like This Is How It Feels and Saturn 5 sounded as fresh and confident as ever, proving that their music has not aged, it has matured. There was a raw energy that blended nostalgia with something surprisingly current, and the crowd responded with full-voiced singalongs and wide grins.

Rock City itself seemed to lean in and listen when the band paused to honour Mani, whose recent passing has sent a wave of sadness through the music world. The moment was delivered with warmth rather than gloom. It was a reminder of shared history and the ties between these great bands and the people who loved them. A hush fell briefly and then applause rolled through the room like a warm tide. It was sincere, and it mattered.

Then there were the fans. Inspiral Carpets have always had one of the most distinctive fan traditions of the era and they brought it proudly. The affectionate mooing, part joyful tribute and part identity marker, echoed between songs. It started as a ripple and soon became thunderous, bouncing from the balcony to the bar in playful celebration. It is silly and brilliant and absolutely perfect.

By the midway point, the gig felt like something more than a tour date. It became a shared memory in the making. The band looked comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely happy to be back in front of an audience that still cares. The crowd, mixed in age but united in spirit, danced, laughed, mooed, sang, and cheered. Some gigs remind you where you were. This one reminded you who you are.

As the final chords rang out, it was clear this was not just a nostalgia trip. It was proof that Inspiral Carpets still hold a real place in British music and in the hearts of those who remember, and those discovering them anew. Enthusiastic, emotional, and gloriously loud, this was a night that Rock City will carry in its walls for a long time.
