Review of Kate Rusby’s Winter Light Tour, December 2024

Kate Rusby’s Christmas show is a joyous tradition, and this year’s performance marked an incredible 19 years of her beloved festive tour. Known as the “Barnsley Nightingale,” Kate brought warmth, wit, and an unmistakable South Yorkshire charm to the stage, creating an evening that was as magical as it was musical.

The setlist was a blend of traditional carols, festive originals, and whimsical fun. Drawing from the pub carol traditions of South Yorkshire, Kate breathed new life into songs like While Shepherds Watch Their Flock by Night—treating the audience to not one, but three of the 30 known versions! The audience joined in enthusiastically, embodying the spirit of those historic pub singalongs that are so deeply rooted in Christmas history.

The show opened with Hark Hark and Deck the Halls, immediately setting a festive tone. Ruby the Reindeer, Kate’s quirky on-stage companion, made her appearance, adding a playful touch that kept smiles wide throughout the evening. Standout moments included The Frost Is All Over, Noel Noel, and the hilariously catchy I’m Getting Nothing for Christmas.

One of the highlights of the evening was a medley that included nods to popular culture and personal milestones. From Bluey to musical tributes for Cyril’s 50th and Barry’s 80th, this section showcased Kate’s humor and knack for connecting with her audience.

In classic Rusby style, the band was impeccable, weaving brass, strings, and harmonies into a glorious festive tapestry. The lively Let the Bells Ring and the comical Big Brave Bill Saves Christmas brought laughter and cheer, while the encore—featuring a brilliantly humorous nod to the 40th anniversary of Band Aid—had the crowd roaring with laughter at the costumes and clapping along.

Of course, no Christmas show would be complete without the classics, and the night ended perfectly with We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. By the time the lights dimmed, it was clear that Kate Rusby’s Christmas show is a celebration not just of the season but of the communal joy that music can bring.

This was an evening full of charm, tradition, and festive cheer—an experience that leaves you with the glorious realization that, yes, Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year.
