Peter Pan – Nottingham Theatre Royal 10.12.24 Theatre and Arts by Editor - December 11, 20240 The Nottingham Theatre Royal’s 2024 pantomime, “Peter Pan,” is a must-see for anyone looking for a festive treat packed with laughter, music, and a sprinkle of magic. This dazzling production brings the timeless story of Neverland to life with imaginative sets, vibrant costumes, and an energy that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. Leading the charge is Aiden Carson as Peter Pan, soaring through the theatre with a sense of adventure and charm. Alongside him is Kate Stewart as a feisty and fun Tinker Bell, adding plenty of sparkle and sass. The Darling children—Wendy (Molly Farmer), John (Matthew Allen), and Michael (Harley Butler)—are delightful, bringing warmth and innocence to the tale. And then there’s Richard Winsor, a Nottingham favorite, who dives into the role of Captain Hook with a perfect mix of menace and humor, making him the kind of villain you love to hate. But let’s talk about the real stars of the show: Paul Chuckle and Steve Hewlett. Chuckle’s Starkey is a comedic gem, delivering classic panto gags that land every single time. Hewlett, as Smee, is equally brilliant, wowing the audience with his ventriloquist skills and razor-sharp timing. Together, they’re an unstoppable duo, lighting up the stage and bringing endless laughs. A standout moment involves a hilarious dating game skit between Hewlett and the Magical Merman that had the entire audience in stitches. Speaking of the Magical Merman, this character deserves a special spotlight. Usually played by Gok Wan, the opening weekend saw director and choreographer Alan Burkitt stepping in due to Wan’s illness. And wow, what a performance! Burkitt was an absolute professional, injecting his own humor and flair into the role. He didn’t just fill in; he made the part his own, with witty one-liners and a larger-than-life presence that had the crowd cheering. His turn as the “twin brother” of the Merman was a brilliant twist, and his comedic chemistry with Hewlett was pure gold. The show also features some fantastic musical moments, including a lively rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” that got everyone clapping along. The mix of modern songs and traditional panto elements works beautifully, creating an atmosphere that’s fun for all ages. While some of the jokes lean towards a more grown-up audience, there’s still plenty for the little ones to enjoy, from slapstick humor to the magical story itself. “Peter Pan” at the Nottingham Theatre Royal is the perfect way to add some sparkle to your holiday season. With a cast that’s brimming with talent and a production that’s as funny as it is heartwarming, it’s a show that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. Running until Sunday, 12 January 2025, this is one trip to Neverland you won’t want to miss!
