MurphyFest 2024 – meet the bands

Nottingham punk rock legends Verbal Warning’s first gig was way back in 1980.

They have had various line-ups and a lengthy spell out of action since those early days but still provide a fantastic show in 2024 with a great mix of fun songs and more serious one too from their three acclaimed albums.

Highlight of the show is the ‘flying punk rock ducks’ moment!

VW have played all over the country at a variety of venues and festivals including Rebellion, Bearded Theory, Concrete Jungle and Strummercamp.

Their gig diary is as packed as ever and when playing smaller pub/club venues they always mix their own material with some great covers of punk rock classics as well as a few surprise choices!

Urban Hillbillys were born on the backstreets of Urbanville, but whenever we can, we spend our time time down by the creek in Twistedwood, on the front porch of our cabin playing our kinda country. With our acoustic blend of Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Fiddle and Cajon, the music we play is heavily country influenced, along with a sprinkling of Irish Folk all blended Hillbiily style. Our set-list includes foot-stomping, sing-along classics. If you are after a good-olde fashion, foot stomping sing-along hoedown then give us a Holler….HELL YEAH….

“Warren Ireland is a live looping bundle of words, chaos and energy.

Combining commanding vocals, intricate guitar playing and thumping beatboxing – Warren delivers a sound all his own.

The electro-indie blues set is filled with stories about mental health and identification, life & love, friends and family.

Hailed as one to watch on the UK’s grassroots festival scene, Warren’s often seen around all corners of the UK throughout the year.

Having performed at the likes of Bearded Theory, Ey Up Mi Duck, Something To Smile About, Rock & Bike Festival among countless more.

When he’s not playing festivals he’s entertaining audiences with his own renditions of popular songs of the previous 60 years.

His highly requested version of Pink Floyds’ “Another Brick in the Wall” is revered as his hallmark cover.

Artists such as Pink Floyd, Billy Strings, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eminem, influence Nottinghams’ finest looping artist along with grassroots powerhouses in Nick Parker, Funke & The Two Tone Baby, Nick Helme, and Samantics.

There’s been lots of rumbling about Warren in recent years, and it can’t be recommended enough that you attend a performance to see why”

Darwin’s Rejects are a 6 piece band, playing Folk/punk/ rock (its difficult to put a genre on us as the intention was to be “different” with no specific type of music, when we started as a covers band (as many do) we played our takes on many of the festival favourites, Levellers, Ferocious Dog, Headsticks, along with more mellow songs from the likes of Gaz Brookfield & Nick Parker,.

After several years of covering songs, we decided to work our way into the originals scene, hence Broken Nation was born.

The current line up has been together for just over 2 years now, with the exception of Ellie, who joined us last year to add some electric guitar.

Ellie Owen on electric guitar & vocals

Jamie Sharratt (ex Shank’s Pony) on Mandolin

Warren Ireland (solo originals loop artist) on acoustic guitar with effects

Jim Myatt (Ex Sons of Clogger) on Drums Alan Fisher on Bass

Russ Torr on lead vocals

Darwins have been a band since 2016 and have built up a decent following within the independent festival scene.

They released their first EP last Summer called “BROKEN NATION” and are half way through recording their first album which will be released around spring time 2024.

Life Commitment Dog rescue (LCDR) is a small but well established foster-based rescue in Derby, run by husband and wife team Russ and Tracy.

Embracing in unwanted and abused dogs, regardless of the vet bills they inevitably accrue is what they are all about. Never using kennels, these dogs are nurtured by foster carers across the Midlands or by Tracy herself in her home.

When it’s time for the dogs to seek their forever homes, LCDR rigorously home check, so they only get the best care. They also offer back up for life – this means being available for advice, and will always take the dog back in to rescue at any time during its lifetime.

They really are the little rescue with a big heart.
