The Meaning of Life – I Want To Do With You What Spring Does With Cherry Trees – Review

In anticipation of the release of their sophomore E.P Diamonds and Junkfood, Brooklyn based alternative band The Meaning of Life have released lead track, “I Want To Do With You What Spring Does With the Cherry Trees”. Since releasing their first E.P The Meaning of Life have been creating a unique brand of pop-indie music that should strike particular chord with Shoegazing fans this side of the Atlantic.

Opening up with a very catchy, melodic and atmospheric guitar riff which draws you in very quickly combined with lead singer Marta DeLeon’s almost haunting like vocals “I Want To Do With You What Spring Does With Cherry Trees,” is an immediately likeable song. Bathed within layers of swirling synths and spacey reverb the track defiantly has a very late 80’s early 90’s feel to it that creates a chilled out vibe you would have on repeat in the car and in fact wouldn’t be out of place within the soundtrack to the Ryan Gosling film “Drive”.

“I Want To Do With You What Spring Does With Cherry Trees,” is a very enjoyable song only a few things stop it being perfect 10. The biggest issue is that it feels ever so slightly to long but this is unlikely to deter a shoegaze fan. Should the song be a little faster and the arrangement tweaking to bring the running time to around the 3.30 mark then it would be a radio friendly hit. Now, being as the song is the last one on the E.P having a long expansive song is a great way to sign off

This is a very catchy and instant song that is hopefully a sign of good things to come from Diamonds and Junkfood, due out February 17th. On a final note, with the recent announcement of Ride’s reformation; should The Meaning of Life land in the U.K anytime soon they may prove to be a very popular hit.

7/10
