Wrapped in Plastic – Birmingham 5/4/13 Music Reviews by Editor - April 9, 20130 Wrapped in Plastic Flapper, Birmingham 05/04/13 Reviewed by Laura Powers Last Friday these imps of industrial finished their initial port of call on their first UK tour by molesting a member of the audience. He didn’t know it was going to happen. Maybe it had been due to the staged fight he had with the singer, Gitzy Bundy, in the midst of the last song ‘Unreal’. He was left on stage gaffer taped to a mannequin for all the world to see. The night had started well with support from Wrapped in Skin, Attic Green and ZF Experience who set the stage with a mixture of different sticks of rock that got the crowd pumped ready for the main act. The stage was transformed into a twisted toy shop of lanterns, corn syrup and mutilated barbie dolls, reassuring the audience it was to be the usual theatric night of debauchery. Opening with ‘Messiah’, Bundy appeared on stage in a white robe and rubber gloves wielding a variety of items from an old battered bible to a blood oozing heart, quickly whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Classic tracks such as ‘Marionette’ and ‘Popomatic’ were mixed in with newer material from their forthcoming EP ‘A is for Abuse’. For the traditional cover of the night, almost unrecognizable until the appearance of lyrics, Gary Numan’s ‘Metal‘ was transformed into their own distinctive industrial sound. Audience participation was considered mandatory, Bundy ushering the crowd closer, singling out fans to dance and molest. In reference to recent laws passed regarding hate crimes directed at alternatives and sub-cultures, the song ‘Abuse’ was introduced with a defiant Bundy loudly claiming, ‘We have immunity!’. An unholy communion was then performed, Bundy offering the crowd red wine from a goblet which was quickly passed along the front row, the goblet eventually being abandoned for the bottle. Like the wrapped up audience member left on stage, the untidy sound that the band produced that night is a reminder of the mixed up midget gems of the ever changing industrial scene. The bands next gig will take place in Manchester where the madness shall surely follow. For more info on their tour, check out their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/505751129471103/
