Glastonbudget Rocks 2012

This year’s Glastonbudget 2012 is almost here & festival spokesman Paul Mitchell is keeping us at Lyric Lounge Review up to date with all the happenings at Festival HQ!

We are just 1 week away from what promises to be one of the biggest events happening across the county during the Diamond Jubilee Weekend of 1st -3rd June. This years festival will attract some 15,000 attendees. It’s a long way forwards from the first ever Glastonbudget back in 2005 which saw just 700 people enjoy 18 tribute bands.

This year there will be over 160 bands performing including the years three, yes three special guests, Leicestershire’s very own originals, Showaddywaddy who scored a No1 UK hit back in 1976 with “Under The Moon Of Love.” Following the festivals Friday theme of Glam Rock will be original band The Sweet who scored 10 top 10 UK hit singles & have sold over 55 million albums worldwide. Headlining main stage Friday night will be T-Rex tribute – T-Rextacy.

Special Guests

This year’s 3rd special guest will see a return of 80s One Hit Wonder Chesney Hawkes who scored a No 1 hit single with “I Am The One & Only” back in 1991.

Paul told us that Chesney had given such an amazing performance 2 years ago with a 90min set of covers & of course, his own huge hit, that “We simply had to have him back again, he will be appearing on our main stage on Sunday at 4.15pm.”

Saturday’s festival theme of “Kings  & Queens Of Pop” will see tributes to Wham, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Erasure & The Pet Shop Boys plus more.

Sunday’s theme of “Britpop & Rock” will see tributes to Kasabian, Oasis, Queen, The Who, The Rolling Stones & many more.

New immerging talent

Glastonbudget is not just about the tributes Paul told us, “It’s also about giving ground breaking new up and coming acts a platform to perform. This year sees over 130 original acts & bands performing on our 6 stages including our brand new “Jubilee Marquee.” One such band is Leicester’s The Boobytraps who have been gigging up and down the country over the last year at such venues as the world famous Cavern Club Liverpool & London’s Hope & Anchor, as well as several O2 Academy slots. If you are into indie, check them out on Friday evening in the 6,500 capacity Big Top at 8.40pm, or at one of the many festivals they will be performing at this year.”

 World Record Attempts

To coincide with this years Diamond Jubilee event, Festival organisers are attempting to break 2 world records.

Biggest Union Jack seen from the air:-  There will be an attempt to create the biggest Union Jack in history and have it registered as a world record. The idea is to get enough people in one of the camping fields to have colour co-ordinated tents and plot them into a Union Jack visible from the air as a giant flag. Not everyone will have the right coloured tents but our nominated charity LOROS have been busy saving lots of red, white and blue material so tents can be draped accordingly. People wanting to take part in this record attempt would need to fill out the registration form found on our website.

Aunt Sally (Head-in-Hole):- You may have seen these boards on Brighton pier and have had your photo taken in one. Festival organisers are planning in conjunction with LOROS and Leicestershire’s Charnwood Arts, to make the biggest to date, measuring some 20m wide. The artwork is being undertaken by Charnwood Arts blending in six different themes going through each decade of Her Majesties throne. Money will be raised by charging a very small fee to have your photo taken and proceeds raised will be donated to both LOROS and Charnwood Arts.

Not too late to go!

For those wanting to go, it’s not too late. Full weekend passes, day tickets & information is still available through the festival’s website at www.glastonbudget.org
