Maxïmo Park’s return to Rock City earlier this week was a vivid reminder of why they have endured for over two decades. This was not a band going through the motions or trading on past glories. Instead, it was striking just how much they still enjoy what they do. That sense of pleasure and commitment radiated from the stage and fed directly into the room.
From the opening run of songs, there was a clarity of purpose and an infectious enthusiasm. The performances felt sharp but relaxed, with the band clearly revelling in the chance to play these songs live, together, and at full force. Paul Smith’s presence was buoyant and generous, his delivery animated without ever feeling forced. There was a sense of musicians who remain genuinely invested in their material, still curious about how it lands and still thrilled by the response it gets.
The setlist itself was expertly judged. Books From Boxes drew a huge, heartfelt reaction, its chorus carried by a crowd that knew every word. Girls Who Play Guitars crackled with urgency, sounding as lean and vital as ever, while The Coast Is Always Changing offered a moment of reflection that held the room in near silence, a reminder of the band’s emotional intelligence as songwriters. When Our Velocity hit, the energy surged, bodies moving in unison, the room alive with momentum. Apply Some Pressure was a triumphant closer, explosive and communal, leaving no doubt about the bond between band and audience.
Just as notable as the band’s energy was the crowd itself. This was an audience fully present. There were no waves of mobile phones held aloft, no distraction, just attentiveness and shared enjoyment. It felt refreshingly old-school, like the early days of live music, where people came to listen, to move, and to be part of the moment rather than document it.
That combination of a band clearly still in love with performing and a crowd genuinely engaged made the night feel special. The songs have aged with dignity, not because they belong to another time, but because they continue to resonate. At Rock City, Maxïmo Park delivered a set full of warmth, precision, and joy, proving that 20 years on, they are still doing this for all the right reasons.
